“Memories in Abstraction”@Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi Art Fair 2024
“Memories in Abstraction” a duo exhibition of Jeremy FUNG and TSANG Chui Mei, presented by SC Gallery, Hong Kong. In “Memories in Abstraction”, we invite you to embark on a captivating journey
through the artistic realms of Tsang Chui Mei and Jeremy Fung, two visionary artists whose works converge and diverge in captivating ways.
Through their distinct approaches to artistic expression, Mei and Jeremy invite us to explore profound narratives and engage with concepts of memory, history, and the intricacies of the human experience. Tsang Chui Mei is known for her large-scale abstract paintings that explore the intersections of architecture, mapping, and landscape. Her sizable canvases are alive with a fusion of lines, shapes, and fragments, capturing the energy and complexity of various sceneries.
The techniques used in Mei’s works are a visual representation that symbolizes how she forms her memories. In her creative process, she captures the poignant essence and the complex nature of memory, by juxtaposing remembrance through the repeated process of automatic mark-making and layering of materials, with its eventual loss through erasure by the hands of relentlessness of time. Through her meticulously layered and gestural abstractions, Mei challenges us to question our perceptions of space, time, and identity while the unpredictableness of memory is at play. In contrast, Jeremy Fung is both a painter and sculptor, whose works often explore themes of memory and philosophy within the context of the landscape. His abstract landscapes incorporate a range of materials, such as wood, charcoal and Chinese ink to create textured and multi-layered compositions.
Fung uses wood as his medium of choice, as wood carries symbolic associations and cultural connotations. It is a natural material derived from trees, which are rooted in the earth. They are a symbol often associated with growth, life, and renewal. By focusing on wood, Fung taps into its symbolic resonance and evokes a sense of connection to nature. Wood’s grain, texture, and organic patterns also provide a rich visual surface. Through manipulating wood by scorching, staining, or distressing, it results in an uneven and perhaps jagged surface thus exposing the intricacies beneath. Despite these physical transformations, Fung is still able to preserve and showcase the natural textures and features of wood, and creates a weathered and aged appearance to his pieces. His works then evoke a sense of introspectiveness, and invite the viewers to contemplate on history, decay, and memory. The scenes he captured on wood boards are not only based on his memories of sceneries he had seen before, but also
images created in his mind through spontaneity and improvisation, with the use of freehand brush work. Jeremy’s landscapes, with both fabricated and actual memories, challenge traditional representations by incorporating symbolic elements, evoking a sense of decay, transformation, and the passage of time.
“Memories in Abstraction” serves as a platform for dialogue and exploration, where Mei and Jeremy’s artistic visions intersect and diverge. By juxtaposing their works within the same exhibition space, we aim to ignite a dialogue between their unique artistic languages, highlighting the resonance and dissonance of their respective approaches. Through this duo exhibition, we invite the audience to immerse themselves in the intricate layers of Jeremy’s and Mei’s artistic universe. Experience the power of their brushstrokes, the depth of their concepts, and the profound impact of their visual narratives.
