CHOW CIAO CHOW x Doris CHUI x Jake WONG x Ant NGAI: “Whisper or Loud”, SC Gallery

Whisper or Loud brings together four artists from Hong Kong who have found their own voice within a “noisy” world, each using their artistic language to create resonance and forge identity. Chow Ciao Chow (b.1984) radiates positivity, masking his often-overlooked inner sorrow. With vivid tones, he employs the “crying sun” as a symbol that conveys the necessary existence of sadness amid sun-like optimism. Chui Suet Wai, Doris (b.1997), explores ways to coexist with loneliness by adopting bright neon tones and hand gestures to echo inner states. She presents three works that represent different moments: early morning, celebrations, and late night. Wong Man Kit, Jake (b. 1995) has a rational approach to inner feelings as he’s aware of the gap between what we want and how we feel. He uses geometric forms and flat planes of colour to guide viewers through perceiving subtle emotional changes. Ngai Wing Lam, Ant’s (b. 1986) fantastical world is inhabited by fish-headed characters inspired by her experience of raising koi fish. Artworks in this exhibition are inspired by the “House–Tree–Person” test, which therapists use to evaluate the cognitive, emotional, and social functioning of the person who draws these things. The exhibition blends their voices to explore how different artists manage the chaos of the world and the stillness within themselves differently.
