SC Gallery is pleased to present “Whisper or Loud”, a group exhibition featuring Chow Ciao Chow; Chui Suet Wai, Doris; Wong Man Kit, Jake and Ngai Wing Lam, Ant. The exhibition explores the noise and silence of the world, as well as the fluctuations and stillness within us. Through distinct artistic approaches—ranging from vivid to restrained, from expressive to introspective—the four artists engage in a subtle dialogue within gallery space, where four voices blend together in search of resonance. The exhibition opens on 9 May and runs until 20 June.

Chow Ciao Chow (b. 1984) uses highly saturated warm tones and flat images to establish a passionate and striking visual language. His work emerges from the realization that, while he projects positivity to others, he has often overlooked his own inner sorrow. This inspired him to adopt the “crying sun” as a symbol, suggesting that even a sun-like, optimistic person requires moments of sadness. Here, sadness is framed as both natural and necessary. Through powerful imagery, Chow emphasizes the importance of emotional expression.

Chui Suet Wai, Doris (b. 1997) continues her exploration of inner states and the sense of isolation in urban life. She employs contrasting neon colours to depict figures and scenes. While her earlier practice focused on overcoming loneliness, in this exhibition Chui shifts her attention toward coexisting with it, presenting three works that represent different moments: early morning, celebrations, and late night. She deliberately uses hand gestures to explore how they reflect inner states. Compared to her earlier works, these pieces adopt a brighter tone, positioning the body as a bridge between the internal and external worlds.

In contrast, Wong Man Kit, Jake (b. 1995)’s practice is marked by calm and thoughtfulness. Using geometric forms and flat planes of colour, he constructs minimalist and well-organized layouts, exploring inner feelings through a rational visual language. In this exhibition, Wong employs low-saturation cool tones to examine the distance between expectation and reality. For him, this distance is not inherent, but gradually emerges through the recognition of the gap between what we think we want and what we feel inside. Extending the tension between rationality and sensibility, he constructs pictorial space that guides viewers to perceive subtle emotional changes.

Ngai Wing Lam, Ant (b. 1986) focuses on dreams and the subconscious. Her “fish-headed” characters originate from her experience of raising koi fish and their appearance in her dreams after they passed away, forming the basis of the fantastical spaces within her work. In this exhibition, Ant’s work is inspired by the “House–Tree–Person” test, which projects the test-taker’s subconscious state, relating to family, social life, and self-identity through their depictions of a house, tree, and person. Ant employs this concept to create a series of scenes, presenting her imagination of an ideal “home”. Viewers are invited to reflect, during the exhibition, on their own “House–Tree–Person” world through considerations of scale, structure, and colour.

“Whisper or Loud“ conveys the spectrum of emotions that exist between noise and silence. SC Gallery warmly invites viewers to explore, together with the four artists, how to become aware of their own voice within a noisy world, discover personal resonance through colour, form and symbol.
