Stanely Shum (b.1989, Hong Kong) graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of The Chinese University of Hong Kong with First Class Honor in 2013. His oil works investigate the mentality of individual and social ideologies of reality. SHUM explores the psychological portrayals of contemporary society, as well as the nonentity of social power, depicting an imaginary new world of hope with dazzling promises. The artist combines realistic and metaphorical sceneries by infusing imaginary scenes, nature landscapes, and man-made urban landscapes into the same compositions. His works exhibit a state of confusion and melancholy, it is also a response to the current social turbulence.
Shum’s solo exhibitions include “Aurora” (Gallery EXIT, 2024), “LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED” (SC Gallery, 2022), “The Dark Scene” (Compton Art Gallery, 2015). Selected joint exhibitions include “Taipei Dangdai 2024”, “Where Great Minds Shine” (Arts Pavilion, Art Park, West Kowloon Cultural District, 2023), “Shining Moment” (TANG Art Foundation Hong Kong, 2021), “The Blazing World by Stanley SHUM | LI Ning” (Gallery EXIT, 2020). He is also the Finalist of The 2023 Sovereign Asian Art Prize and has been awarded Cheung’s Fine Arts Award (Western Painting) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the CUHK Convocation Outstanding Creativity Student Award. His artworks is being collected in the JPMorganChase Art Collection and private collections over America, China, Indonesia, Singapore, and Australia.
